9 Dernys at the Newport Nocturne!

With the winner receiving his weight in beer and races being followed by Ferrari supercars, the Newport Nocturne is well known for it’s innovations. This year’s event will be just as pioneering. The promoters are introducing Derny pacing to fans of town centre racing. Dernys are strange power-assisted bikes which allow riders to be paced and to shelter from the wind. Promoter Nick Jeggo said “We think this is a really exciting idea. We decided that if they have this sort of event in Holland and Belgium, there’s no reason why we can’t have one here. British Cycling have been very supportive and having an extra event on the programme has allowed us to attract another sponsor. It’s been tough going this year, so that’s really important.” The event is described as a Derny pacing ‘demonstration’ rather than a race. There will be just eight Derny pacers and riders have been selected according to their pacing experience. Mr Jeggo went on to say “We’re just going to play it by ear. We’ve got a really experienced team of Derny drivers, led by Alex Wharton. Our circuit has long wide straights , so it’s suitable for this type of event in a way that many town centre races aren’t. You never know, it could lead to a proper full scale race in the future!” The Newport Nocturne takes place in Newport, Shropshire High Street, this Saturday 1st September.(Photo courtesy of Lydia Van de Meerssche)

8 Ex-Winners in Nocturne Bid!

Two ex-winners are amongst the latest stars to sign up for the Newport Nocturne floodlit cycle race. Endura team mates Russell Downing, winner in 2003 and his Ian ‘Superman’ Wilkinson winner of the last event in 2010 will be lining up on 1st September. Both will be keen to win. Wilkinson’s season has been blighted by illness and he’s only just returned to top form. Downing is one of a small group of Endura riders who will have touched down earlier in the day from a pre Tour of Britain training camp. Downing will be the only rider of that group to take part. He’s asked special permission from his team to allow him to ride the Nocturne, one of his favourite events. Meanwhile, two other teams think they have the Nocturne winner in their midst. Raleigh GAC will be working for local star Simon Holt, a very competent town centre racer. The biggest threat to Endura probably comes from the strong Rapha Condor Sharp squad. Olympic Gold Medallist Ed Clancy is in fine form while another local rider Andy Tennant is still smarting from his exclusion from the final Olympic Team Pursuit line up. It should be an epic battle!

Clancy also went on to take Bronze in the Omnium, a sort of track cycling Heptathlon. Clancy is named as one of six entrants from Team Rapha Condor-Sharp. His team mate Andy Tennant will also be keen to do well. Wolverhampton born Tennant is patron of Newport Cycling Club’s Youth Academy and has attended several club events.

6 Lap Prizes

The Newport Nocturne is offering businesses and the public the opportunity to sponsor laps in the event. Riders in both the men’s and women’s events will be sprinting each lap to win prizes. With each lap of the race taking around two minutes, the commentator will talk about the race for one minute and about the sponsors for the rest of the time. Co-Promoter Nick Jeggo said “It’s a really popular way for people to get involved with the event. Laps can be sponsored for as little as £50, but for £100 you get more chat! We’ve had people sponsoring laps for relative’s birthdays and even in memory of people! I think it’s a really nice and original thing to do. Of course it’s great for businesses too, it’s a massive audience.”

5 Nocturne Help Needed

The organisers of the Newport Nocturne are asking for volunteers to help at the event. Chief Marshal Sean Lacey said “We need as many stewards as we can get. Most of the work is quite straightforward. Most of the circuit has barriers, so it’s a case of stopping people climbing on them. We also have to man crossing points. at several points around the course.” Refreshments will be provided. There will be a marshal’s meeting in the late afternoon. To volunteer, call Sean Lacey on 07712 806928 or email seandlacey@gmail.com.

3 Nocturne Window Competition

As in previous year’s there will be a competition for the best Nocturne themed shop window. Co-Promoter Nick Jeggo said “we’ve had some fantastic windows in the past and it’s been very competitive. It’s good for the businesses too because something unexpected in the windows is bound to make people look.” The competition will be judged on the day before the event which takes place on Saturday 1st September. Businesses outside Newport town centre should contact the organisers on 07967 452688 so that their businesses can be visited.

1 Newport Nocturne Back in the Spotlight!

Just a month after being cancelled the Newport Nocturne, the UK’s original floodlit bike race, is back on the calendar! With just a few weeks to go until the event on September 1st, the promoters are working flat out to get everything in place in time.

Promoter Nick Jeggo said “We’d effectively cancelled the race, but some backers have come forward and suddenly the race is back on. It’s not just been about sponsorship, we’ve been offered all sorts of practical help too. It’s great to know that event is held in such high esteem.”

First held in 1989, the biannual race has become a firm favourite on the cycling calendar, attracting up to 15,000 spectators. Past editions have featured International cycling stars such as Mark Cavendish, David Millar, Sean Kelly and Jason Queally.

In addition to the floodlit format, the event has been innovative in other ways. Riders in one lap exhibition races are accompanied by Ferrari supercars, while the winner of the main Elite/Pro race receives his weight in beer using a set of giant scales!
The Newport Nocturne will be held on the evening of Saturday 1st September.
